ATEX solution for biomass storage

 ATEX safety requirement...

Having looked at a variety of options it was decided to mount the drives and controls for the external warehouse shutters in weatherproof enclosures on the outside of the building. This solution worked best given the size and weight of the doors. To meet ATEX requirements within the building a smaller internal door (6m x 6m) makes use of an ATEX rated drive and controls.

Approached by a customer working on a new-build biomass storage facility at Ayr Harbour the GfA team was asked for a solution that would accommodate very large insulated roller shutters (6 m wide x 9m high) but also meet the ATEX safety requirement for storing hazardous materials.

Mounting the chain drive (top left image below) on one of the large insulated roller shutters which used the GfA SG115 KE 80.24, foot mounted chain drive.

All KE drives comprise: Worm gear, interchangeable output-shaft for handling the drive, emergency low level manual operator and integral digital limit switches. A separate GfA safety brake was supplied for this project as the KE range do not incorporate an integral anti fall back device.

The ATEX zone is equipped with a 6m x 6m internal door (being fitted in the image above, bottom left) which uses a SG115F Si 80.12 (Safedrive®) which complies to ATEX standards and is controlled by a push button with the main control panel in a sealed unit.

Above right shows one of the completed external doors showing the weather-proof enclosures around the drive and controls.
